Hospital-sponsored lotteries seem like a win-win, but will they be? One expert says ‘no.’
Many hospitals that are canadian lotteries that are used as fundraisers. Prizes ranging from large cash benefits to property and cars receive away to fortunate winners, while the proceeds are accustomed to support the medical operations at the hospitals.
For many, this appears such as a win-win proposition. But a minumum of one big name in the Canadian medical industry believes why these lotteries could be more dangerous than people assume.
Medical Journal Editor Speaks Out
Within the most issue that is recent of Canadian Medical Association Journal, editor-in-chief Dr. John Fletcher published an editorial stating that hospitals choosing to operate these lotteries should take care to ensure they’re protecting players who are in danger for problem gambling if they want to live as much as their social responsibilities.
‘It is contradictory for legislation to ban hospitals from selling one potentially harmful, but legal, addictive item on the premises tobacco while allowing them to actively promote another lotteries,’ wrote Dr. Fletcher. ‘Have we lost our compass that is moral to an extent that people are blinded to the duty to ‘first do no harm’ by the attraction of easy revenue?’
